Power
Having high-level power is a major separator as a fighter. Your game plan against Ngannou is going to look a lot different than it is against Jimmy Pillow-Hands. The more power we have the more technical our opponent has to be to compensate. This means a more timid and cautious opponent and allows us more ability to have room for error and impose our will on the opponent. Power is our ability to express how strong we are in a short period of time. It typically takes 60-100 ms to throw a punch. Power is expressed through how high of a percentage of total force can be expressed in that short window of time. It’s a combination of being strong, fast, and reactive, and these are qualities we can and need to train in the weight room.
STRENGTH
FAR more professional fighters are lacking strength more so than conditioning. Strength training is important because having a higher level of force production allows you to be a greater threat no matter your size. Being undersized and lacking strength severely limits your strategy as a fighter and can give an opponent the upper hand by allowing them to overpower you and win positions solely due to brute force and not necessarily technical ability. Becoming stronger not only makes you a more imposing force, but more resilient as well. As we develop strength and build the proper structure we create a body that can handle higher levels of stress/force. This means reducing injury risk and damage taken. When you become stronger your old 100% effort becomes your new 80% which also becomes a massive advantage. Having a proper strength program is a major separator at all levels of combat sports.
CONDITIONING
High-level conditioning is essential to be a competent fighter. If all you do is zone 2 cardio, and long-distance runs you are not properly preparing your body to handle the demands of your sport. Fighting is high-intensity cardio the entire time from zone 3, to your active rest, to zone 5 when exploding on offense or defense. Your training should reflect that. Combat athletes often have a very rigorous training schedule; however, the body has a finite ability to recover and adapt from stressors. Developing an endless gas tank it requires diligent programming and communication. Here at Berserk, we make intelligent programs that take into account all of your stressors so we can make you elite! Relying simply on long-duration runs and incline treadmill work will get you killed by someone who has a proper program.
